Asian Golf Travel Nation - August 2013

Dear Golf Travelers,

Golf in Asia

Greetings from Asia and welcome to the latest issue of the Asian Golf Nation, the source for news breaking information about golf in Asia.

It's summer in Europe and North America, winter in Australia, and low golf season here in Asia. This means great deals and fewer crowds at the golf courses and resorts. It's my favorite time to golf here. Find out more about what I mean in this issue.

Also, despite being low season, the Golfasian office is as busy as usual. This past month we held our annual tem building in Hua Hin. All 40 of the staff participated in the event and believe it or not the Golfasian drivers beat the managers in golf. I wonder what our drivers are doing while they wait for our clients to finish their golf games each day. Anyone heard of driving ranges?

Kidding aside, everyone had a great time away from the office and we started our corporate social responsibility by donating food, materials, and money to a needy school in remote Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

On the golfing side, our Phuket Amateur Week event was a hit for the 4th year in a row. In fact, a new entrant from the Philippines won the event and he displaced all Australian champions to date as the reigning champion. The Amateur series has since moved on to Siem Reap where the inaugural Cambodia Amateur Week is now being played. Due to the event's popularity we are holding six events in 2013-14, including new events in Bangkok and Vietnam. This gives amateur golfers world over the chance to participate in regional golf events that both challenge ones golf skills in a fun setting and provides excellent networking opportunities for every participant. Check the Golfasian website for details.

As always there are many golf 'happenings' around the region so with that, I invite you to enjoy this edition of the Asian Golf Nation..

Golf news from around the region:

Thailand
*Thai Country ClubBangkok: Following on last month's announcement as the most visited city in the world, Bangkok has been selected as the "World's Best City" by Travel & Leisure magazine for the fourth consecutive year. The No. 1 ranking in the magazine's top 10 cities list was based on a poll of readers including golfers who cast votes to rate their favorite cities. Not resting on these laurels, I know of at least 2 new championship courses scheduled to open by within the next 12 months and several course renovation projects underway. These new additions and upgrades will continuously push the quality of Bangkok golf offerings that make Bangkok such an appealing golf stopover destination for both short-haul and long-haul visitors.

Siam Country Club WatercoursePattaya: Siam Country Club just could not stop at having the 2 best golf courses in Pattaya. The new Waterside Course is quite far along and should easily be ready for its official opening next May. All 18 holes are shaped and many of the holes are now grassed. Clubhouse pilings are being cemented daily and at my visit last week I was able to see excellent progress. Take a look at the photo and you will see what I mean. Once complete Siam Country Club's 63 holes will be the largest golf complex in Thailand and I can think of no better way to visit Pattaya than playing a golf marathon that includes all 63 holes. By then, the enhanced playability of the newest 18 at Waterside will be a welcome addition to the hillier 18 at the Old Course and undulated 27 at the Plantation Course.

Malaysia
*CIMB ClassicKuala Lumpur: Have you ever heard of a course hosting both a US PGA and US LPGA event in the same month? Well hold on to your hats and read this. Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club
is hosting the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia and the CIMB Classic on October 10-13 and October 24-27, respectively. The LPGA event will have 72 of the world's best female golfers, including #1 ranked Inbee Park, line up in the four-round - no cut tournament. The CIMB event, for the first time, is now a marquee event on the PGA Tour. British Open champ Phil Michelson will highlight the 78 man, US$7,000,000 event. It is also the first official FedEx Cup event on the PGA Tour to be held in Asia and many PGA Tour players are expected to make the trip to Malaysia for this year's event.

Golfasian is offering special event packages, where in addition to witnessing live tournament action; golfers can enjoy rounds at other top Kuala Lumpur courses like The Mines Resort & Golf Club, Royal Selangor Golf Club, and Saujana Golf & Country Club. The packed events calendar makes Kuala Lumpur a great choice for a golf trip this October. Combined with other domestic or nearby international resort destinations like Langkawi or Phuket, respectively, and both golfers and non-golfers are sure to have a great time. Contact Golfasian for more details.

Vietnam
*Ho Tram Golf CourseSaigon: The Grand - Ho Tram Strip, Vietnam's first integrated resort-golf-course-casino finally opened for business in July. The resort is under soft-opening for invited guests and features
a 1,110 room hotel with 10 F&B outlets, three swimming pools, a spa, convention space, luxury retail shops, and a Greg Norman-designed golf course. Located 1.5 hours from Saigon the
Course plays through rolling dunes and has dramatic ocean views from practically every hole.
On a recent visit Greg Norman commented "It's a true links golf experience with sea side, sand dunes, and wind." The golf course construction is well along and first golfers are expected later this year.

With that I would like to once again thank those of you who have golfed with us recently, it was nice seeing you and I hope your trip was memorable one.

Remember, while the offerings are many, the choice is yours, and golf in Asia is waiting for you.
Whatever your budget, preferred style of travel, or how small/large your group, we are glad to work with you and suggest a golf package that meets all of your needs.

Until the next newsletter, happy golfing and I hope to see YOU in the area very soon!

- Golf Travel Testimonials

Golfasian's Travel Satisfaction GuaranteeHi Ian

We have just arrived home from our trip to Hua Hin and just wanted to pass on our thanks to you and the team at GolfAsian. From the time we arrived at the airport, until we returned to the airport, all the staff and drivers were great and very accommodating.

Our accommodation at the Warana Resort was also once again quite good.

The golf course were great. Palm Hills and Majestic are great layouts and I think a little under rated. Sea Pines, Banyan and Black Mountain fantastic, and to finish on Springfield and play the original full 18 hole course was a treat.

We have already discussed some ideas for next year (we are hoping to go in Feb again) and I'll be back to you in the next few weeks with some ideas. I need to do a little research first.

Once again to you and all the team... thank you.

Cheers

Malcolm B.

- Saigon, Vietnam, Destination Review

Saigon, Vietnam, Destination ReviewLike many cities in Vietnam, Saigon has an interesting past. Because of its strategic location for trade and commerce, Saigon continued to grow and became a city by the late 1700's. In the mid-19th century, the French invaded the Saigon port city. This event led to long struggle between the people of Vietnam and France leading to the defeat of the French in 1954. By the 1960's and 1970's, Saigon was bustling with commerce and business. It was the cultural center and the capital city of South Vietnam. The city had an air of a French provincial town with a Vietnamese twist, and this still remains today.

In 1976, after the fall of South Vietnam the new government renamed the city Ho Chi Minh City. However, the city is still referred to as Saigon by the locals. With a population of over 5 million people, Saigon is one of the densest urban areas in the world. Unlike other cities in Vietnam, Saigon is very active at night. Sidewalk cafes dot the city, pubs and restaurants stay open late into the night, and entertainment options for visiting Saigon golfers are a plenty.

There are several championship golf courses in Saigon such as Long Thanh, Vietnam Golf & Country Club, and Twin Doves. While typically reserved for member's play, our specialized golf travel agents can confirm tee times for Saigon golf visitors. With several excellent golf clubs available and amazing historical & cultural sights Saigon is a must stop for any Vietnam golf holiday.

Long Thanh Golf ClubThe Long Thanh Golf Club offers 36 holes of golf in the former rice paddies and scenic countryside surrounding Saigon. The Ho Chi Minh City golf course is located 30 kilometers north of the city on a hilly with unobstructed views back towards the Vietnamese capital.

Both the Hill and Lake course are well maintained throughout the year and the golf courses are a longtime favorite among locals. Many expatriates and Vietnam golf visitors prefer Long Thanh Golf Club over its more famous neighbor Vietnam Golf & Country Club.

Red Mountain Golf Club... the best in Thailand?

Red Mountain Golf Club... the best in ThailandI honestly dont know the answer to that, there will be many that point to Black Mountain in Hua Hin, Amata Spring in Chonburi, Siam Country Club in Pattaya or Alpine in Bangkok. I know for sure there isn't a more spectacular golf course in Thailand and the views are unrivalled anywhere.

Winding its way through a truly dramatic 1400 rai formally a tin mine site in the heart of Phuket, Red Mountain is one of Asia's most exciting courses that officially opened in 2008. The course has been cleverly routed to take advantage of a huge variety of landforms and elevation changes.

- Golfing Tips by Ian Morgan - Best Time to Visit Thailand

Most people know that our high season starts in November and officially ends in mid April at the start of the Thai New Year. During this time conditions are normally perfect with clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine. But low season is also a great time to play golf in Thailand with cooler temperatures, less golfers, cheaper hotels and green fees. We have had very little rain this year and what rain we have had has been in short bursts with very little interruption to our golf.
