Dear Golf Travelers,

Welcome to Golf in Asia!Welcome to the latest issue of the Asian Golf Nation, the source for news breaking information about golf in Asia. In addition, unique golf playing tips for South East Asia's tropical environment, announcements of golf travel promotions, and our latest tournament offers are all parts of this newsletter.

Most of South East Asia is now enjoying the 'green season' and while traditionally a slow time of the year, we at Golfasian are busy welcoming many new and repeat golf visitors. In particular, August and September seem to be the most popular of the 'slow' months. Prices are at their lowest and service hospitality at the highest standard as compared with any other time of the year. During these months the typical late afternoon showers are a welcomed way to cool things down and ensure green playing conditions. I know that in the past golfers have shunned travel during these months, but nowadays I find more and more golfers who actually look forward to this time of year as opposed of being a deterrent for travel to the region.

As for myself, I just returned from a month long tour of the USA. Playing jewels such as Pinehurst #2, Oakmont, and Chambers Bay reminds me of how good golf can be and how far South East Asia needs to raise the bar in terms of quality golfing. The courses here, with only a handful of exceptions, really need to look outwards to see what can be done in terms of course, design, maintenance and operations.

On the other hand, aren't golf trips more than about great golf?  Here in South East Asia, available golf, fascinating culture, great food, world-class service hospitality, and affordable luxury make a total golfing experience. In fact, after getting home I can see why golf in Southeast Asia is an experience unlike anywhere else in the world. Now where is my regular caddie?

A winner of the 2014 & 2015 World Golf Awards with the title of Asia's Best Golf Tour Operator 2014 and Thailand's Best Inbound Golf Tour Operator 2015, Golfasian has once again been nominated for Asia's Best Golf Tour Operator. Please, vote for us now:

Asia's Best Golf Tour Operator              Vietnam's Best Golf Tour Operator

Thailand's Best Golf Tour Operator              Indonesia's Best Golf Tour Operator

As always there are lots of golf developments around the region, so sit back and enjoy this edition of the Asian Golf Nation.

Gassan Khuntan Golf and Resort
Gassan Khuntan Golf and Resort, Chiang Mai, Thailand

After a long decline, Gassan Khuntan is back to top form. Jim, our Chiang Mai expert was there last month and reported that the course is in really excellent condition. Major renovations were completed over the past 2 years. Things are so good now that Gassan Khuntan may even be the best conditioned course in all Chiang Mai with lush, green, and well-maintained landscaping throughout. The Chiang Mai course has to be one of the most scenic courses in Thailand and also one of the most difficult. My tip for golfers headed to Chiang Mai – include a round at Gassan, take your camera, and forget about your score.

At the recent opening it was made clear that the links-style course will become the centerpiece in the race to create Vietnam's newest and best new golf tourism destination. Things are moving so fast that a second Quy Nhon course is scheduled for a November opening along with a brand new resort.

New 2016 Super Saver Golf Specials
Asia Golf Week

As Thailand is starting to cool down and we are moving into our winter months, our Chiang Mai Golf Week held in October is starting to gain plenty of interest from golfers around the world. The event is a 6 night / 4 round package where golfers play in the stableford format over 4 rounds. The winner is the player with the highest 4 round total. There are prizes on offer each day as well as overall prizes to the winners and runner ups as well as Nearest the Pins on Par 3's and best front and back nine scores. We also handicap each day to keep a fair playing field for the entire tournament players.

The tournament Hotel for the week is the 4 star Holiday Inn. The two golf courses for the week are  Alpine Country Club which hosted the Alpine Masters in 2015 and Chiang Mai Highlands which added another 9 holes to the course last year.

The Alpine Golf Club course follows through the valleys and mountains that surround the course. There are streams, ponds and bunkers all in strategic positions to add to the golfer's visual delight. Special mention must be made of the Par 3 15th hole, an island green that, at only 129 yards from the white tees, seems to turn seasoned golfers into beginners and reaching for their old golf balls.

For bookings to Chiang Mai, mention this newsletter and receive a free room upgrade at the Holiday Inn for bookings paid before 1st September 2016.

After Chiang Mai we then focus on the two biggest events we have, the Amari Hua Hin and Amari Pattaya golf weeks. Each event sees a field of 120 people from around the world play the best golf coursesfrom each destination. While the tournaments aren't until March 2017, we have 35 players already booked, with most people taking the free room upgrade from the Amari Hotels. Book your position now and don't miss out on a great week of golf!

We have 12 group tours throughout the year and all details of these events can be found on this link.

If you would like to book one of our events, or have any questions, please email us at [email protected]

Graham Cater

My name is Graham Cater, an Aussie who plays Southport Golf Club on the Gold Coast of Australia. It is there I hone my skills and test my mental strength to ready me for our annual Thailand Golf Tour.

Playing golf in Thailand is not just about the game it is an exotic experience that has left me with the most wonderful memories from the Land of Smiles. Now I don't always play well and I have been known to miss the odd easy putt but nothing can stop the enjoyment I get playing on some of the best golf courses in Asia.

I first heard about golf in Thailand and Golfasian whilst playing with a group in Singapore. It sounded exciting and the more I investigated the practicalities of putting a tour together the more enthusiastic I became. Then it all came together in March 2012. I had contacted Golfasian and received a quick response from Bee. I was amazed at the efficiency with which Bee put our first golf tour in Hua Hin together. Local travel arrangements, hotels and golf all materialized without a hitch. Five years on and Bee is still looking after our group. She has become our good friend as have many of the wonderful staff of Golfasian. Currently we are considering Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia for an extended tour, all of which are covered by Golfasian with their own in-country staffs. What makes touring so easy with Golfasian is their awareness of your individual needs. This is integral to their business model. There are no compromises, no snags and no surprises...

Phuket, Thailand

Phuket, Thailand

The Pearl of the Andaman is an hour's flight south of Bangkok and is without question what people imagine to be typical of the beauty that Thailand has to offer. Beautiful beaches and mountainous scenery has attracted holiday makers to Phuket for many years, and although the high season is a little shorter than other destinations in Thailand due to the monsoon rains in July, August and September it still has much to offer for golfers the rest of the year. Since our last review of Phuket in 2014, much has happened in a positive way on the golf scene for golfers to enjoy. Laguna Golf Club has completed its renovation and is fully open and in great condition and will host the Singha Phuket Open at the end of October this year. Blue Canyon has new owners and they have already made positive improvements on the championship course. Loch Palm is still as popular as ever and the spectacular Red Mountain is rated by many in the top six courses in the country.

An hour north of Phuket International Airport is the province of Phang Nga which recently opened a very good course called Katathong which was originally an old tin mine. With two new projects about to open in Khao Lak, golfers will soon have an exciting new area to discover.

The airport expansion was completed in March, so along with improved road conditions we feel Phuket as a golf destination is all positive and very much open for business!

Laguna Golf Phuket

Laguna Golf Phuket features a resort golf course with pleasant breezes from the Andaman Sea. The Phuket golf course is not too demanding and reflects the natural beauty and tropical surroundings of Bang Tao Bay. Phuket Golf Laguna is set on a valley floor overlooked by low wooded hills and marsh lands.

The Phuket golf course was re-designed in 2014 and now the Laguna Golf Phuket is both more challenging and memorable. Golfers need to think their way around the golf course as each hole offers a multitude of shot options and both nines have good variety.

Press Release

25% Discount On Vietnam World Masters Golf Tournament

A big increase in support from AccorHotels has prompted organisers to offer a 25% discount on tournament packages for the second annual AccorHotels Vietnam World Masters from 4 to 10 September 2016.

Last year's tournament was a great success with players from America, Canada, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand in attendance. Such was the success of the tournament, major sponsor AccorHotels is getting behind the event in a major way.

This is great news for golfers as event organisers have just announced a 25% discount on all event packages. It's very rare for events to get cheaper, but the reality is that golfers signing up for the 2016 AccorHotels Vietnam World Masters will pay much less than those who attended last year.

The pricing of the tournament package has gone from USD $1,890 down to USD$1,420. This is enormous value when you consider the package includes 6 nights at the 5 star Pullman Danang Beachfront Resort, 4 rounds on the best resort courses with carts and caddies, welcome and presentation dinners plus nightly socials, a fabulous prize pool, airport + golf transfers, goodies bag with shirt plus much more.

Pattaya Golf – Take the rough with the smooth

Pattaya Golf – Take the rough with the smooth

Undoubtedly Thailand golf is gaining in profile and quality thanks to a growing golf tourism market and increased television exposure of tournaments such as the Thailand Classic (Black Mountain) and Thailand Championship (Amata Spring). These 2 courses compare with some of the best in the world but understandably with that comes a price premium. I can see that someone arriving to play in Thailand probably will be looking for something special but perhaps they might wish to look further for an experience that is equally rewarding in different ways, but at a relatively bargain price.

Golfing Tips

Drink Enough Water

Club Rental Service

It's the middle of the hot and rainy season here in Thailand. As we've explained before your golf won't be a washout but you may have to take shelter for 20 minutes as a storm passes. Be prepared for the humidity and rain. Bring a waterproof golf bag cover and brolly (preferably with a reflective surface to keep the sun off you when it isn't raining). Bring a couple of spare gloves, and bring a towel.

All of these things can be purchased at decent prices on arrival so don't sweat it…
