August 2018 Edition

Dear Golf Travelers,

Welcome to August and latest edition of the Asian Golf Nation, the source for news breaking information about golf and golf travel in Asia. Also, unique golf playing tips for SE Asia’s tropical environment, announcements of special tours, updates on boutique golf tournaments for amateur golfers, and some interesting golf traveler feedback are all integral to today’s newsletter.

It’s summer in Europe and North America, winter in Australia, and low golfing season here in Asia. Low season means great deals and fewer crowds at the golf courses and resorts. It’s my favorite time of year to golf as the weather is overcast (e.g., no so hot) and in spite of being the so-called “rainy season,” precipitation is mainly confined to late afternoons or early evenings.

On the golf tournament side of things, we continue to promote three events in September and October, and we are launching two new events for high season 2019. Check out our dedicated tournament website for more details.

For those of you wanting to travel to Asia this winter to try something unique, we've developed a suite of hosted golf tours that enable the everyone to experience the very best of Asia's golfing and culture together with some of the region's off-the-beaten-track hidden gems.

As usual, there are lots of 'happenings' around the region so with that; I invite you to enjoy this edition of the Asian Golf Nation, learn about what's new in golf travel from around the region.

While some say that Asia's incredible golf courses are the main attractions, its really the rich cultural experiences and very friendly locals encountered along the way that often leaves the fondest impressions. Just consider the caddie experience, and you will know what I mean.

Anyway, thanks to you, Golfasian remains Asia's top golf operator providing services centered around authentic golf experiences and great value. Your recognition of our quick responsiveness, impeccable attention to detail and tailor-made personalized service is what sets us apart.

Complete full-service itineraries created for your specific travel preferences, expectations, group size, and budgets are our specialty. Please contact us for a competitive quote.

Until the next newsletter, happy golfing and I hope to see you in Asia very soon!

GOLF NEWS FROM AROUND THE REGION

Bangkok, Thailand

Golf course management and name changes seem to be the rule here in Bangkok as many of the original courses built in the mid-nineties come to the end of life and need fresh investments to flourish into the future. Muang Ake Wangnoi Golf Club is now Wangnoi Prestige Golf & Country Club and the former countryside course past the Don Muang International Airport has been brought up to international and tourist-ready standards. The new playing option is welcome news for Bangkok golf visitors, especially for those flying from the domestic and low cost carrier airport.

Danang, Vietnam

The Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course golf course that’s under construction and part of the Hoiana mega-project south of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hoi An will be Hoiana Shores Golf Club. Located on the coast of the South China Sea, approximately 8 kilometers south of Hoi An, known as ‘The City of Lanterns,’ and Trent Jones first project in Vietnam, Hoiana Shores is part of a major destination development with the ambition of becoming one of the most compelling golf experiences in Asia. Hoiana Shores Golf Club scheduled to open in mid-2019.

Singapore

Golf in Singapore is at an interesting stage of development and is facing challenges as leases for some five of the twenty or so golf courses expire, and they close over the next few years. Interesting though, Raffles Country Club which was dated for closure on July 31 to make way for the terminus of the Singapore – Malaysia high-speed railway, may still be open as the recently elected Malaysian government has second thoughts on the entire mega rail link project. That’s good for us golfers!

GOLF DESTINATION REVIEW: Bangkok

A personal destination review from John Blanch General Manager at Thai Country Club.

Bangkok is one of the best destinations for a golf holiday in the Asia Pacific region. The capital of Thailand boats one of the regions busiest airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airport, which are frequented by hundreds of airlines from most major airports in the world. There is an abundance of hotel options to select that will satisfy the most discerning traveler – from budget boutique hotels all the way to the ultra-luxurious which are far more affordable than their sister properties elsewhere in Asia and every type of option in between.

What is there not to do in Bangkok - Golden palaces, floating markets, majestic temples, incredible roof top bars, a seemingly endless choice of dining options to satisfy every taste and amazing nightlife. Savor mango sticky rice at a food stall before taking in the gilded splendor of the Grand Palace you've never seen a capital city quite like Bangkok.

And then comes the golf with a myriad of fantastic golf courses from championship courses such as Thai Country Club, Alpine Golf Club, Nikanti Golf Club and others whose fairways have been trod by Tiger, Sergio and others to more humbler courses which are just as much fun to play. Bangkok is also the perfect place to either start or end a golfing trip should you choose to venture to Hua Hin, Pattaya or Chiang Mai with a game on day of arrival into or departure from Thailand.

Bangkok is one of the most spectacular and fascinating cities in the world offering incredible value for money and the opportunity to play some of the finest golf courses that Thailand has to offer.

What Makes Nikanti an Unusual Golf Course?

It seems like the golf architect Pirapon Namatra (Ope) of Golf East listened quite a lot to Tina Turner’s famous song ‘Break every rule’ when he designed Nikanti Golf Club, Asia’s first 18 hole, par 72 golf course comprising three six-hole layouts each with two par-threes, two par-fours and two par-fives. Thailand’s 291st golf course was opened in May 2014. The Nikanti Golf Club is almost adjacent to Suwan Golf Club.
