Golf news from around the region:

Thailand
*Santiburi Chiang RaiBangkok: Bangkok received a lot of media attention lately due to the heavy floods covering large areas north of the city. It is true that many factories and neighborhoods were badly inundated during the past few weeks. Unfortunately many of the reports were inflated and did not reflect the real situation in Bangkok. Downtown Bangkok, the main tourist areas, golf courses, hotels and shopping areas have remained dry. The International Airport has been and is fully open. Our Bangkok golf tours and tours including other destinations like Hua Hin, Phuket, Chiang Mai, etc. are running normally. In any case, the floods are receding and life is getting back to normal in all areas. I would like to reassure our golfing friends that there is absolutely no problem to golf in Bangkok.

Chiang Rai: Most of the new Happy City golf course looks great and some of the course will be opening this month. Happy City's signature par-3 hole is designed in the shape of Thailand. They also have some Kiosk's with various nations in mind (e.g. a windmill for the Dutch) which should make for a certainly “Happy City” indeed! Kidding aside, from everything I can see this will be a great addition to golf in Chiang Rai.

Malaysia
*The Golf Club Datai BayMalacca: Guess who scored another hole-in-one on a FAM trip to the World Amateur Golf Tournament in Malacca? Yes, yours truly and it was on none other than the signature island green hole at Dye designed Orna Golf & Country Club. This was my first time golfing in Malacca and while the area is not as mature as the more developed destinations like Kuala Lumpur or Langkawi, it is very appealing to golfers who love to visit a UNESCO World Heritage city with rich European colonial history and a variety of championship golf courses nearby.

Vietnam
*Danang, Vietnam is Asia's Emerging Golf DestinationDanang (Golf Coast Vietnam): The new Laguna Lang north of Danang is progressing well. Earthworks for 14 holes have been completed and the surrounding resort is being developed by Banyan Tree which should assure a high standard of operations and quality. In addition to views of the ocean, golfers will experience a mountain backdrop and rich variety of woodland, scrub and rocky outcrops around the course. Once completed Laguna Lang will form a trio with Vietnam's best golf courses including the award winning Danang Golf Club and Montgomerie Links Vietnam. The Nick Faldo designed course is expected to open mid-2012. Visit www.golfcoastvietnam.com for more information.

With that I invite golf travelers to come and spend the year-end holidays in Asia, which is magical at this time of the year wit festivities, special events, and great golfing. Tailor-made itineraries to your specific travel preferences, expectations and budgets are our specialty; contact us for a competitive quote.

Remember if you want to get regular updates about golf in Indochina, then sign-up for uninterrupted email delivery of this newsletter. In addition, all persons signing up will automatically receive the latest "Thailand Golf Insider Tips" special report.

After the 18th hole in Bangkok

Thailand Golf BlogA round of golf usually finishes at the 18th hole at most golf clubs. Then it's off home for a cup of tea or a hot chocolate before bed. Well one of the pleasures of taking a Bangkok golf holiday is the fun just does not stop at the Bangkok golf course.

Bangkok not only has over 60 golf courses, but it is also known globally for its excellent shopping, great cultural attractions, great spa and massage, and of course a wide variety of restaurants and night life.

When is the Best Time to Tee-off at a Thailand Golf Course?

Red Mountain Golf ClubI am often asked by my customers when the best time to tee-off is when you play golf in Asia. Many people choose to tee-off in the morning which is their personal choice and it would be my recommendation too particularly in the low season which is generally from July to October. If you are going to get rain at this time of year its normally late afternoon so a morning tee-off is a good option.

However, in high season my preference is to tee-off after lunch which results playing the back nine in the coolest part of the day. Remember to take plenty of liquid during your round and make use of the drink stops. [Read more Golf Tips Articles]
