Asian Golf Travel Nation - July 2012

Dear Golf Travelers,

Golf in AsiaWelcome to the latest issue of the Asian Golf Nation, the source for news breaking information about golf in Asia. In addition, unique golf playing tips for Indochina's tropical environment, announcements of golf travel promotions, and our latest subscription offer are all integral parts of today's newsletter.

Living in Asia one of the things I miss most about home is the seasons. Spring, summer, winter and fall don't really exist here. Instead Asia has hot, dry, and rainy seasons (although the joke here is that there's only hot and hotter). At any rate, we're into the so-called rainy season now, which usually means a heavy downpour in the late afternoon or early evening for an hour at most. The upside is prices are at their lowest and the temperature rarely goes above 30 degrees. The days are generally overcast with cooling breezes - ideal golfing conditions. Most of all the golf courses have finished their annual maintenance and are in excellent condition and there are few golfers plying the fairways - a perfect time to come for a golf trip!

Speaking of prices, South East Asian destinations topped a recent Trip Advisor price-value survey. Hanoi, was the top value city while Bangkok earned third place. The survey noted that Asia remained the most affordable region for travelers looking for deals over the summer season. In another survey, MasterCard ranked Bangkok the third most popular destination among world travelers. In fact, with 60 courses to choose from I almost always suggest a couple for days in Bangkok at the beginning or end of every South East Asian tour so golfers can find out for themselves why the Thai capital ranks so high.
Golfasian has organized special packages across most of Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia for the next 3-4 months so golf travelers can take advantage of the excellent conditions and low pricing. These packages can be found on our website or send an inquiry and I will be happy to discuss you travel preferences directly with you.

Of course there are many other 'happenings' around the region so with that, I invite you to enjoy this edition of the Asian Golf Nation.

Golf news from around the region:

Thailand
*Siam Country Club New CoursePattaya: Earthworks at the Siam Country Club New Course are underway (see photo). The IMG designed course promises to be a lake course that plays in a valley and through a series of 4 lakes. Once completed in 2014 it will make Siam CC the largest operating golf complex in Thailand with 63 holes.

Phuket: Our Phuket amateur event is for the third year in a row is almost sold-out and we have already decided the event in 2013. This gives amateur golfers world over the chance to participate in regional golf events that both challenge ones golf skills in a fun setting and provide excellent golfing values for every participant. We reserved a few slots for last minute bookings, so let us know right away if you are interested in playing. Otherwise, you might want to consider playing in one of our other events in October.

Vietnam
*Dalat Palace Golf ClubDalat: Royal City is now operating with 9 holes and future development is frozen and uncertain. I think they are waiting to get some income from real estate sales. This is a shame considering the quality of the first 9. On the other hand, the new Tuyen Lam (Rose Garden) Golf Club project is progressing and is expected to open with 18 holes in the first half of 2013. Personally, I look forward to see more golf courses in Dalat so it becomes more a well-known golf destination. Of course, Dalat Palace is my favorite layout in the country and where I recoded my first hole-in-one. Check-out the signboard next to the opening hole.

Malaysia
*Bukit Jawi, Penang Golf ResortPenang: The back nine at Bukit Jambul Country Club, Penang Island's premier golf club, is closed for renovation until October. In the meantime we are sending golfers to Bukit Jawi, Penang Golf Resort, and Kulim Golf Club, all of which are in good condition and on the mainland within 45 minutes from Penang Island.

With that I would like to once again thank those of you who have golfed with us recently, it was nice seeing you and I hope your trip was memorable one. Whatever your budget and preferred style of travel, we are glad to suggest a golf package to meet your needs.

Until the next newsletter, happy golfing and I hope to see YOU in the area very soon!

- Phan Thiet - Vietnam's Beach Golf Destination

Golfing in Phan ThietPhan Thiet is 200 kilometers northeast of Ho Chi Minh City and the overland journey takes 4-5 hours. The Phan Thiet / Mui Ne area is Vietnam’s most iconic golf destination. It is home to excellent seaside golf resorts and an amazing array of beach activities. Even first time golf visitors to Phan Thiet will quickly be enthralled by how fun and fascinating Phan Thiet really can be. For those looking for some excellent golf, a glimpse of the real Vietnam, and a few fun night’s out, Phan Thiet mixes old world charm with a modern and vibrant night life.

Binh Thuan province, where Phan Thiet and Mui Ne are located, formerly belonged to the Cham kingdom. The two towns are located 30 minutes from each other and combined make up the main tourist area. Phan Thiet is situated between mountains, rivers, sand dunes and the ocean. Mui Ne is just "over the ridge" from Phan Thiet, locked behind the sand dunes and pressed up against the sea. The area has the lowest annual rainfall anywhere in Vietnam and is a true desert region. Due to the low rainfall and cool ocean breezes, Phan Thiet / Mui Ne has some of the best year round Vietnam golf weather.

- Featured Golf Course - Ocean Dunes Golf Club, Phan Thiet

Ocean Dunes Golf Club, Phan ThietThe Ocean Dunes Golf Club located in Phan Thiet features a 6,746-yard Par 72 golf course designed by Masters and British Open champion Nick Faldo. It is an outstanding natural site with sea and wind swept sand dunes, tropical costal breezes and fantastic ocean views. Asian Golf Monthly magazine identified the course as one of the top-10 resort courses in Asia.

Coastal breezes shape the course's day-to-day characteristics. Ocean Dunes is an engaging and playable course for both low and high handicap players. Experienced players will appreciate the exciting opportunities posed by the ever-present ocean breezes. Casual golfers like the course to the open links styling. It has the feel and the playability of early an Scottish seaside course, but in a tropical climate.

The Best 18 Holes in Phuket

The Best 18 Holes in PhuketJust for a bit of fun I decided to put together my favourite 18 holes for golf in Phuket, which when you take time to think about the options, its not that easy!

  • Hole 1, Blue Canyon – Not the easiest opening hole and a fairly tight tee-shot. Hitting the fairway is a must if you want to get your second close on this severe undulating green.
  • Hole 2, Loch Palm – Good par 5 winding its way round Crystal Lake. Water in play all the way to the green, but reachable in two for the long brave hitters

- Golfing Tips by Ian Morgan - Making The Most of Your Thailand Golf Lesson

Making The Most of Your Thailand Golf Lesson Taking a golf lesson in Thailand or anywhere golf in Asia is played is an investment. Not only do you invest money in it (unless you're getting a free 10-minute lesson from a Bangkok Golf Pro from Golfthink.com), but you also have to invest time, both when you take the golf lesson itself and afterward, on the practice tee, when you work on what you've learned.

Given all that, you want to make the most out of your investment. These tips should help.
