Destination Spotlight: Chiang Rai – Off the Beaten Path and Well Worth a Visit
*Chiang Rai GolfOver the last few years Chiang Mai in northern Thailand has been our fastest growing golf destination, as it offers excellent golf, great value and plenty of cultural appeal. Now more and more golf travelers are also beginning to discover Chiang Rai. Just 3 hours from Chiang Mai via a scenic highway through the northern mountains, the two cities are easily combinable and both offer 'user friendly' airports with multiple daily flights to/from Bangkok. Both also offer a wide range of hotels suitable to all tastes and budgets.

Santiburi Chiang Rai is Thailand's best golf course undiscovered by the majority of visiting international golfers (and actually many Thai golfers would like to keep it that way but we're letting the secret out). It's difficult for a course designer to build a course that is highly appealing AND highly enjoyable for ALL golfers, regardless of experience, talent or gender. However Robert Trent Jones Jr. did just that with Santiburi after a major assist from mother nature. Play it once and you'll surely be back.

Waterford Valley is also well worth playing when in the area, and next year the new Happy City course will make for 3 international standard golf venues.

Thailand's northernmost province abutting Myanmar and Laos, Chiang Rai further offers interesting sightseeing and cultural opportunities. In town there are several beautiful ancient temples. Local markets offer a wide array of goods, crafts and edibles. The scenic Mae Kok River runs through the city center and can be explored by longtail boat. And further afield lies fascinating mountain destinations as well as the Golden Triangle and the border town of Mae Sot.

While the nightlife scene remains rather low key, the central area offers several bars and restaurants catering to visitors, and a more local scene can be found on the riverfront and further south nearby the new Central Plaza shopping mall.

Until the next newsletter, happy golfing!

*Featured Golf Course - Santiburi Chiang Rai Country Club

Santiburi Chiang Rai Country ClubSantiburi Country Club was the first Chiang Rai golf course. The Chiang Rai Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed Santiburi Country Club is laid out over vast fields with excellent placement of holes and an abundance of water hazards and bunkers. The golf course is widely regarded as one of the best conceived and maintained golf courses in Asia. Golfers living in Thailand will tell you that Santiburi in Chiang Mai is one of their favorite golf courses in Thailand, and this is no small compliment!

The golf course is championship caliper, yet it is playable and enjoyable for golfers on every skill level. Set into the contours of a valley, it offers a superbly landscaped golf course that winds beneath a canopy of magnificent shade trees, across crystal clear lakes and streams, reflecting turquoise skies and pearl white clouds above, and the lush green foothills and mountains of Chiang Rai in the distance. RSS Golfing Tips - Custom Fitted Clubs and Their Importance

Thailand GolfAn average of 43 percent of the strokes you make in a game of golf will be putts. The next highest is your woods, at 25 percent, followed by 13 percent chipping, 10 percent irons, and 5 percent hazard shots.

Putting is incredibly important. Most people want to hit the ball farther and straighter. That's important, but effective putting makes the difference between an average golfer and a good golfer.

Don't forget the mental side; tell yourself you are a great putter, and you're going to sink every putt you look at. Then practice to gain confidence in that belief.
