The year is already moving fast as we already change seasons from winter to spring. For many of you, this means it's time to dust off the clubs and start practicing. In Asia, it is a time to start our low season, which means low prices for you. Golfers are encouraged to take advantage of special discounts where one can golf at rates as much as 50% less than during high season, and this includes both standard and premium courses throughout the region. Inquire here to find out more details!

Of course there are lots of 'happenings' around the region so with that, I invite you to enjoy this edition of the Asian Golf Nation.

Golf news from around the region:

Thailand
*Michelle Wie at the Honda LPGA 20120 at Siam Country Club PattayaPattaya: Siam Country Club has selected IMG to design a new 18 holes to complement the existing 45 holes. Planning and design works have started with construction due to start in late 2012 and course opening planned for 2014. In the meantime, the largest ever Thailand golf event was staged at the Siam Country Club, Old Course. With 14,000 attendees the Honda LPGA went down to the wire when Yani Tseng birdied the last hole to beat Ai Miyazato.

Bangkok: Another high end Bangkok driving range will be open soon. Combining one of my favorite and authentic Bangkok spas, the Phothalai Masters Golf & Leisure Center might just become one of the best places to practice golf in the area. Stay tuned for opening announcements and special golf & spa promotions.

Vietnam
*Legend Hill Golf ResortHanoi: Another huge golf project is the Nicklaus designed Legend Hill Golf Resort in Soc Son hamlet. The first 9 holes and driving range are open while the second nine is probably 1 year away. No word on when visitors are welcome. I guess they are keeping the course for Vietnamese golfers.

Danang: here is the latest from IMG regarding Danang's 4th golf course. Construction on the Luke Donald designed; Ba Na Hills golf course in Danang, Vietnam is on track to complete 9 holes by the end of 2012. Plans call for Mini Verde and Celebration Bermuda varieties of turf to be used on the golf course. Earthworks have been completed on 4-5 holes and grassing will follow in the coming months.

Cambodia
*Vattanac Golf ResortPhnom Penh: If the Grand Phnom Penh Jack Nicklaus signature course was not enough, construction is set to start on a second premium Phnom Penh golf course. Detailed design work on the East Course at the new Vattanac Golf Resort in Cambodia's capital city is now complete, with golf course construction expected to get underway on the Faldo Design project in 2012. Check-out this ridiculous picture of the Angkor Wat inspired 3rd hole. The plan is to create two 18-hole championship standard courses 15 kilometers from the center of Phnom Penh. Watch for me in the Cambodian Open pro-am at the Grand Phnom Penh on March 18.

With that I would like to thank those of you who have golfed in Asia this winter, it was nice seeing you and I hope your trip was memorable one. Others who want to travel here, but have not made your plans, it's not too late. South East Asia remains the best value premium golf destination in the world and we can build you a golf package to suit any budget and preferred style of travel.

Until the next newsletter, happy golfing!

- Golfing Tips by Ian Morgan - Reading Grain on the Greens

Reading Grain on the GreensGolfers playing in Thailand for the first time often have problems reading the greens. Without getting too technical, the grain refers to the direction the blades of grass grow.

If the green appears shiny to the cup you are going down grain and the putt will be faster and have less break. If the grass appears dull or darker you are putting into the grain and the put will be slower and take more break

Trust you caddy, she will know best!
