March 2020 Edition

Dear Golf Travelers,

Welcome to the March 2020 issue of the Asian Golf Nation, the source for news breaking information about golf in Asia. Also, unique golf playing tips for South East Asia's tropical environment, announcements of golf travel promotions, and our latest tournament offers are all parts of this newsletter.

The coronavirus still dominates the news. My dedicated weekly updates cover relevant travel information and on-the-ground reports so that I won't duplicate the information here. If you have not received the updates, let me know, and I will make sure to send you all the communications.

The year is already moving fast as we are changing seasons from winter to spring. The northern destinations, including Hanoi and Laos, come out from a dreary overcast winter into warmer sunny days and the nicest time for golf. Our other destinations are warming up and starting to get some much-needed rain after a long dry three months. Bangkok and Pattaya have seen their first showers, and the additional water is welcome to replenish golf course supplies and surrounding greenery.

Due to the reduced travel demand, almost all of our suppliers will implement low season rates earlier than normal. From April onwards, rates drop at hotels and golf courses by 50% or more. There will be some extra special deals going out shortly. Inquire here to receive advanced information. Also, our 2020 golf tournament schedule is available to facilitate planning.

Our 2020 Asia Golf Guide, with new golf courses, destination information and things to do has just been finalized and you can get your free copy here.

Until the next month, happy golfing!

Happy Golfing,
Mark Siegel
Managing Director

GOLF DESTINATION REVIEW: Phnom Penh

A personal destination review from Sylvester van Huisstede, Sales & Marketing Manager at Vattanac Golf Resort in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Cambodia, centered between the 2 golfing nations of Thailand and Vietnam, has come a long way in recent years to put themselves on the map as a golf destination. First with Siem Reap where you can play 3 courses close to the world wonder of Angkor Wat and now Phnom Penh establishing itself on the map as the next premier golf destination of the region.

Phnom Penh is one of Asia’s fastest developing cities and has more and more on offer for tourists. International hotel chains have also found their way with Rosewood Hotel who opened their doors recently on top of the city's highest tower, Vattanac Tower, in the center of town.

Along the Mekong river in the center of town is where the nightlife takes place with numerous hotels, (rooftop) bars and restaurants catering food from all over the world. During day time, tours through the city where you pass by the historic colonial French architecture of the city mixed with modern developments gives you a real idea of how the city develops.

MEET OUR GOLFASIAN TEAM

Meet Bua, Operations Executive at Golfasian:

My name is Bua (which means Lotus Flower) and I was born 30 May 1994 in Bangkok but grew up in Saraburi province. I am an only child and live with my cousin and mother.

I did my undergraduate degree at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, where I studied Science and am now working on a Masters Degree at Chulalongkorn University in Economics.

I have worked at Golfasian for close to 2 years, and have enjoyed every minute of it. The best part of my job is meeting happy golfers who are enjoying all that golf in Thailand has to offer. I don’t play golf yet, but I am working on getting my swing going so hopefully I can join our golfers out there soon.

The country I want to travel to most is Australia, as I know many people from there and it would be great to learn about where they come from and see golf there

The Thrill of Teeing Off on a New Course

Back home, you get used to playing regularly at your local golf club. Same pairings, same fairways, same challenges, same cold weather, so there are no surprises along those 18 holes.

Therefore, it is not only great fun to take a vacation in a tropical climate, but also it comes with the thrill of playing on completely new and different courses.

Just arriving on the 1st tee at an Asian golf course feels so different. First there are your surroundings, which are completely different from say your average golf course back in Europe.
