Asian Golf Travel Nation - October 2013

Facebook Like Button    Google +1 Button

Dear Golf Travelers,

Golf in AsiaWelcome to the October 2013 edition of the Asian Golf Travel Nation, the source for news breaking information about Asian Golf. In addition, unique golf playing tips for Indochina's tropical environment, announcements of golf travel promotions, and our latest subscription offer are all integral parts of today's newsletter.

The end of summer means the start of the high season here. Already, our offices are reporting strong bookings for the coming months, particularly so in Thailand and Vietnam. Thailand still shows the highest percentage of repeat golfers, at around 60%, but Vietnam is catching up fast.

With our own subsidiary, GolfAsian Vietnam, we are able to provide first quality serve and offer you low costs due to our direct relationships with the Vietnam golf courses and resorts. We bypasses the traditional mark-ups of local destination management companies and give you all of the advantages in Vietnam that you have enjoyed with us in Thailand over the past 17 years. In fact, this month we purchased another luxury touring van in Danang for your comfort. Golfasian clients get the use of our van while in town for their transfers, which is far more convenient and luxurious than anything else around Danang. Give us a try and you will see what I mean!

Our amateur golf tournaments in Pattaya and Chiang Mai for next month are almost sold-out and I am recommending interested golfers sign-up our 2014 tournament events now. Also, together with our partners we completed the sponsor agreements for a new golf event that will be announced in October that will blow the socks off anything ever staged in Asia. Stay tuned for more information in next month's newsletter!

In October, I will be in Singapore to kick-off our first airline joint venture, in Pattaya to check out course conditions, and in Hanoi to attend the Vietnam golf course awards ceremony. This is quite a bit of travel for sure, but well worth it before things get really busy here.

With that, I invite you to read on and hear what's new in golf around the region.

As always there are many golf 'happenings' around the region so with that, I invite you to enjoy this edition of the Asian Golf Nation..

Golf news from around the region:

Thailand
*Majestic Creek Country ClubHua Hin: Majestic Creek Country Club has completed new grassing of Course A and Course B. Paspalum fairways and tee boxes with Tiff Eagle greens is in fact the same configuration as many of the other Thai championship courses. While things will take a little while to grow in, course conditions are already at the top of the area's more established tracks. Course C should be ready for the high season and with 27 holes Majestic Creek will be in a good position to handle the annual visitor increases at year end. It is a very good sign when established courses upgrade and invest in both their quality and quantity of golf on offer.

Loch Palm Golf ClubPhuket: The info on Loch Palm in the last newsletter was incorrect. It is the 4th hole that is closed and the par-5 5th was changed into 2 x par 4's. The course par therefore remains at 72. The final grassing is completed and the new hole will open for play on November 1st. Sorry for any confusion.

Vietnam
*Song Gia Golf ResortHai Phong: With two 18-hole courses Hai Phong is a popular golf destination for those visiting Halong Bay and wanting to avoid the long drive back to Hanoi. However, while annual rains and seasonal typhoons are play havoc in North Vietnam, the two Hai Phong courses are using this as an opportunity to do heavy maintenance and ready themselves for the rush of golfers who visit nearby Halong Bay later in the year. Song Gia Golf Resort is letting the greens grow in and while this makes for slow putting, it will improve the turf in the long run. Otherwise, the course is in great shape. On the other side of Hai Phong, Do Son Seaside Golf Resort is completing the annual coring, and this includes the fairways. Rains seem to have a bigger effect here and it will be a few months until the course is back in shape for good visitor play.

Malaysia
*Datai Golf ClubLangkawi: The opening Ernie Els designed Datai Golf Club is delayed until next year. In what should have been the best renovation in 2013, the golf course delay will also cause a drastic reduction in golf tourism to the island. We are already receiving numerous booking cancellations for the Christmas - New Year's holiday period. In these cases we are recommending golfers switch to other beach resorts like Phuket or Bali for this winter and include Langkawi on next winter's golf trips.

With that I would like to once again thank those of you who have trusted us with your clients recently, it was nice seeing them and I hope their trips were all memorable.

Remember, while the offerings are many and those offering Asian golf packages are plentiful. Only Golfasian is committed first and foremost to the satisfaction of your clients, second to provide you the most complete golf information and best direct pricing, and finally to protect the integrity of the relationships between you and your clients, at whatever cost.

Whatever your clients' budget, preferred style of travel, or how small/large a group, we are glad to work with you and suggest a golf package that meets all of your clients preferences.

Until the next newsletter, happy golfing and I hope to see YOUR clients in Asia very soon!

- Golf Travel Testimonials

We have asked Dave W., a frequent golf traveler to Thailand a few questions about his golf experiences in Asia. Dave told us what makes Thailand such a great golf destination and how it is different to his homecountry, Australia.Golfasian's Travel Satisfaction Guarantee

  1. When was the first time you came to Asia / Thailand to play golf and what was your first impression?
We first went to Thailand in November 2012. Our first impression of Thailand was very green and tropical.

  2. How many times have you travelled to Asia in total for a golf holiday and why do you chose to come back here?
Since then we have been back once more, so far. We choose to travel to Thailand for golf mainly due to the people. They are friendly happy people and a pleasure to be around.

  3. In your opinion, how is the golf experience different in Thailand compared to Australia?
The golf differs to Australia mainly due to the quality of golf courses, Thailand offers immaculate golf courses, greens are always pristine, fairways are excellent, caddies are generally amazing. Being able to play golf where all you need to do is hit a ball is very unique and rewarding.

  4. What is the most unique aspect of a golf holiday in Thailand that you cannot have anywhere else?
I think the most unique thing has to be the caddies. They are fun loving, never complain, and can joke along with you whilst playing, but still tell you exactly where to hit the ball and how far. They will get excited when things go well, or make fun of you when it doesn't (in a nice way of course)

  5. Which destination in Thailand would you recommend to your friends when they plan their next golf holiday to Thailand?
For us Patong is an ideal location for golf in Thailand. Great central location to some excellent golf courses (Red Mountain and Loch Palm), close to shopping centres and restaurants, close to beach.

  6. What is your favorite golf course in Thailand and why?
Favourite golf course in Thailand, would have to be Red Mountain. Beautiful scenery, challenging course, pristine condition, great caddies, what more do you need?

  7. What services of Golfasian stand out most in your opinion and on which areas could we improve?
Golfasian has always been of exceptional service, nothing is too much trouble, and never have we had a hiccup with anything they have organised for us. Highly recommend dealing with these guys for your next golfing holiday, and don't be afraid to ask for anything, they will go out of their way to accommodate. The only thing I could probably hint at is update their website with current pricing and packages.

    Dave W.

- Phuket, Thailand, Destination Review

Phuket, Thailand, Destination ReviewPhuket is located in Southern Thailand, an hours flight south of Bangkok and is still proving as popular as ever for our golfing clients. Whether you want the solitude of the islands and beaches, or the vibrant nightlife, it's all here and there is plenty of choice for everyone to craft their unique Phuket golf holiday. The Andaman coastline boasts beautiful scenery and stunning beaches which brings back more and more tourists every year and the recent expansion of Phuket International Airport is a testament to that.

Accommodation in Phuket is varied from guest houses to luxurious villas and recently opened hotels such as the Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort and the Pullman Arcadia Naithon Beach have proved very popular with our clients this year. There are some exciting top quality new projects on the way such the new Hyatt Regency and The Novotel Phuket at Kamala Beach as well as the Anantara project at Layan Beach.

As far the golf courses in Phuket is concerned, I feel that we are in a transitional period with Laguna GC and Loch Palm which are both currently undergoing renovation changes. Mission Hills continues to improve, but Red Mountain is certainly the number one course as far as the golfers are concerned and not to be missed if you are in Phuket. So, with the golf course renovations and new hotels, I think the future is very bright for golf in Phuket.

- Featured Golf Course - Loch Palm Golf Club

Loch Palm Golf Club The Loch Palm 18 hole par 72, 6,555 yards golf course is one of the most enjoyable and consistent Phuket golf courses.  Nestling beneath a panoramic range of jungle-clad hills, Loch Palm is easy going although still capable of throwing down many challenges and giving any Phuket golfer a thorough workout. As the club's name suggests, palm trees are liberally dotted around this parkland layout, although never too densely.

On the front-nine the main objective is keeping the golf ball on dry land; many holes are played alongside the loch (a sizeable lake), which has a habit of cutting across some of the gently undulating fairways.

What are the main differences between Siam CC Old Course and Siam CC Plantation Course?
Which course should I play and why?

What are the main differences between Siam CC Old Course and Siam CC Plantation Course?Siam Country Club Old course has been set up as a championship course to host national and international events. The course has large bunkers and greens that have run off area that filter the ball away from the green for a shot that hasn't been hit crisp. The fairways are quite wide from tree line to tree line but the rough is cut in quite dramatically offering the fairway to the straight drive. Fairway bunkers are placed very strategically to protect the ideal line and are located right on the driving distance for the players, regardless of the colour markers you use.

- Golfing Tips by Ian Morgan - Warming Up Before The Game

I think some golfers think there is no need to warm up, just because you are golfing in a hot tropical country... not true! You may have just got off a long haul flight, or had a nights rest in a strange hotel bed, so it's always useful to loosen up by swinging a couple of golf clubs slowly or better still go the range and hit a bucket of balls starting with short pitching club and leading up to long swings with driver. You will feel a lot more comfortable when you arrive on the 1st tee!
