Asian Golf Travel Nation - September 2013

Facebook Like Button    Google +1 Button

Dear Golf Travelers,

Golf in AsiaWelcome to the September 2013 edition of the Asian Golf Travel Nation, the source for news breaking information about Asian Golf. In addition, unique golf playing tips for Indochina's tropical environment, announcements of golf travel promotions, and our latest subscription offer are all integral parts of today's newsletter.

Most of the world's summer holidays are over and it is now back-to-school time for the kids. In Asia, we are in the midst of the "rainy season". One thing that always surprises me is how good the golf is in "rainiest" months of September and October. It really is ironic that so many of you avoid Southeast Asia at this time of year because it really is one of the best times to golf. Rains come for only 30 minutes a day almost always in the late afternoon or evening (i.e. after golf).

This year there seems to be even less rain than in the past. I have enjoyed some of my best golfing at this time of year. In addition to excellent golfing conditions, there are the low season prices and a definite lack of visitors. I find the well-manicured greens/fairways; quick sub-4 hour rounds; and low prices are really hard to beat in fact!

Also with fewer golf travelers, this is a good time for us to prepare for the next high season. We are updating our golf packages to include different parts of South East Asia such as Nha Trang in Vietnam, Luang Prabang in Laos and Bintan in Indonesia. The staff are going on inspection trips and meeting with our key partner golf courses and hotels to obtain the best possible tee times, rooms and rates for you. Finally, we are re-inspecting all of the areas golf courses to insure their quality continues to meet our high standards.

In fact, I was in Vietnam for 2 weeks in a massive effort to play all for the countries courses in preparation for the official course rankings which will be announced in October. I also got down to Pattaya and found the conditions at Siam Country Club Plantation Course to be superb.

Across the gulf, Ian has set-up our first ever retail store in Hua Hin. If you are in the area, drop by and be sure to have a cup of coffee and chat with Ian. Golfasian Hua Hin is conveniently located in front of the Hilton Hotel and Hua Hin Brewing Company.

Next month I am back to Vietnam to complete the course rankings, visit India to work out the details of a large private event, and head to Hua Hin to meet with the golf courses and hotels regarding Thailand biggest ever Amateur golf event. Stay tuned for the details.

With that, I invite you to read on and hear what's new in golf around the region.

As always there are many golf 'happenings' around the region so with that, I invite you to enjoy this edition of the Asian Golf Nation.

Golf news from around the region:

Thailand
*Pattaya Country ClubPattaya: Pattaya Country Club renovations continue with only 9 holes currently open for play. It has been hard to get accurate information about the renovation quality or progress. However, judging by the conceptual design of the new club house the owners are at least thinking about investing quite allot to bring the course up to new international standards. Once completed Pattaya Country Club should contribute favorably to the other golf options in the area.

Phuket: Allot is going on pertaining to golf in Phuket. Laguna Golf Club started a 2-year long upgrading program to improve drainage and plant new grass. Upgrading works for nine holes will carried out during the 2013-14 season and the full 18 holes will be completed in 2015. Loch Palm Golf Club has closed the par-3 12th hole and the former par-5 13th hole has been made into two par-4 holes. The course now plays to a par-71. Mission Hills Phuket Golf Resort continues to focus on quality improvements and will be in a better position to pick up some of the spillover from the aforementioned Laguna closing.

Vietnam
*Sacom Tuyen Lam Golf Club in DalatDalat: Sacom Tuyen Lam Golf Club in Dalat has opened the front 9 holes, driving range, and club house. The second 9 will open in early 2014. Judging from the pictures of both the completed and in-progress holes, once open the course will be a welcome addition to golf in Dalat. I will have to make a visit there soon to see for myself.

Diamond Bay Golf ResortNha Trang: I played Vietnam's first Andy Dye designed signature course last month at the Diamond Bay Golf Resort. Massive earthworks were undertaken and signature features include giant pot bunkers, forced water carries, built-up and undulated greens, and sharp fairways. The golf course is most certainly one of Vietnam's most beautiful and challenging courses. Be sure to get your "A" game ready at the all water driving range before heading out to the first tee.

With that I would like to once again thank those of you who have golfed with us recently, it was nice seeing you and I hope your trip was memorable one.

Remember, while the offerings are many, the choice is yours, and golf in Asia is waiting for you.
Whatever your budget, preferred style of travel, or how small/large your group, we are glad to work with you and suggest a golf package that meets all of your needs.

Until the next newsletter, happy golfing and I hope to see YOU in the area very soon!

- Bintan, Indonesia, Destination Review

Laguna Bintain Golf ClubBintan Island or Negeri Segantang Lada is an island in the Riau Archipelago of Indonesia. It is part of the Riau Islands province.

Singapore, the closest major city, is a 45-50 minute trip by ferry across the Singapore Strait to the Bintan Resort area in the northwest of the island. The island has beaches with beach-front International hotels and resorts. The archipelago of the Riau islands is right opposite to the resorts across the South China Sea.

It is commonly misunderstood as a colony of Singapore because of its higher standards in infrastructures, utilities and security. Very much a family-oriented destination, there are currently five independently owned and operated beach resorts, four Bintan golf courses by famous designers Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Ian Baker-Finch as well as a range of recreational facilities and attractions located within it. Most tourists come for its serene characteristic, where they can laze by the beach, enjoy spa, play golf and dabble in water sports. The area is separated from the rest of Bintan by thick forests and checkpoints.

Most travellers to Bintan Resorts arrive at Bandar Bentan Telani at the western tip of the Bintan Resorts from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal in Singapore.

- Featured Golf Course - Ria Bintan Golf Club

Ria Bintan Golf Club Ria Bintan Golf Club is a 27-hole championship golf course designed by Gary Player. The 18-hole Ocean Course and the first nine holes of the 18-hole Forest Course opened for play in October 1998 and December 2000 respectively.

The Ocean golf course at Ria Bintan offers two distinct playing atmospheres. The course cuts through the native jungle of Riau, where you are more likely to come upon monkeys, small deer or wild boar than other humans. It also has its seaside holes and it’s these holes that will be best remembered by visiting golfers. At the par five 7th (voted best par 5 in Asia) the sea is revealed to the golfer halfway down the fairway. From here you get closer to the sea via the short dogleg 8th and then play along it at the par three 9th. This famous hole, photographed extensively is for most golfers a must play hole requiring a medium iron played over the beach to an archipelago green. The last view of the sea is at the par four 10th where you play alongside the beach.

Golf in Saigon Gets Better

Golf in Saigon Gets BetterUp until recently golf in Saigon was mainly played by local Vietnamese or foreign expatriates. The original 4 Ho Chi Minh City golf courses (Vietnam Golf & Country Club, Song Be Golf Resort, Dong Nai Golf Club, and Long Thanh Golf Club) either were only of average quality or limited tee times for visitors as demand was high and availability was low.
